Willson Contreras has been with the organization for a long time. After toiling in the minor leagues for many years, he was called up in 2016 and made an immediate impact. Since then, his career has had some ups and downs, but he's established himself as a reliable All Star contender year in and year out. His solid bat, quick arm, and strong presence makes him a valuable asset, and he's become a core Cubs player the last five seasons. With back to back All Star appearances in 2018 and 2019, he's among the best in baseball. Today, we celebrate Cubs catcher Willson Contreras.
Dear Willson,
Thank you for a great five years as a Cub, and hopefully to many more. When you first came up in 2016, you had an immediate impact, as your solid play and enthusiasm helped give that team the edge to go all the way. In the years that followed, you proved that you were no fluke, becoming one of the best catchers in the game. You've carried the team at times, probably up the offense on a hot streak with your bat. Your defensive presence is game changing, as your sharp throwing arm is among the best I've ever seen live. I've always loved catchers who can shut down the running game, and I was thrilled that the Cubs finally had a guy like that at backstop.
While it's great having a solid defensive catcher who's also a great hitter, your fiery personality is what makes you fun to watch, between your aggressiveness in throwing pickoffs and your up-tempo pacing. A lineup with Willson in it is always much more entertaining to watch than one without. Your personality has helped give the Cubs an aggressive and winning edge over the last few years. You are one of many reasons why this was a Golden Era for Cubs baseball.
Regardless of what happens in the future, please know that you will always be cherished by Cubs fans. You've given us so much to cheer for, and we are grateful to have you on the north side.
