Love Letters From Pronk: Jose Abreu

Love Letters From Pronk is an ongoing series where Pronk shares his love for somebody connected to the Cubs. Sometimes funny, sometimes weird, sometimes touching, Pronk likes to make 100% sure people know that they are loved, and best expresses that through gushing letters. Today's recipient: non-Cub Jose Abreu

Jose Abreu is the 2020 AL MVP, a 1B/DH for the Chicago White Sox. He's not a Cub, but he's been a fixture on the south side for many years now. While I prefer Anthony Rizzo on the north side, Abreu is one of those guys you wish you had on your roster. He's been a solid hitter for many years, but turned into an absolute masher in 2020.

Here he is winning the MVP, and giving credit to his grandma:

Dear Jose.

Congratulations on bringing an MVP trophy to Chicago. You had a special season, and earned it. Seeing your reaction and thanks that you gave to your family was special. It was so satisfying to see someone so down to earth win it. I love seeing the game be filled with nice guys, and am glad you are a part of it.

I'm sure you are an inspiration to your fellow Cubans, but you are inspirational to Americans as well. I can't imagine what it was like to leave your family and defect to the USA. With how mentally challenging the game of baseball is, it's an accomplishment in of itself for you to be such a good player while carrying that kind of baggage. While your long term relationship with the White Sox has made you a south side icon, I'd argue that with your MVP trophy, you are an icon for the entire city of Chicago.

Please feel free to not destroy the Cubs pitching staff next season. You are welcome to hit three homers in a game off other teams, but you've already done it to the Cubs. No more. Deal?

XOXO,

Pronk
