Minor League Monday: Rosters Announced

The 2021 Minor League Baseball Rosters have been announced! The Cubs have intriguing prospects at every level, giving extra intrigue for each of the four teams this season. Here's who you get to watch at each level this year

The AAA Iowa Cubs aren't currently featuring any soon to break out in a big way prospects, but contain a lot of depth for the MLB roster. Five pitchers in Iowa are on the MLB 40 man: Kyle Ryan, Brad Wieck, Kohl Stewart, Jason Adam and Cory Abbott.

The roster only has four outfielders: Martini, Miller, Ortega, and Maybin. Combine that with the smaller number at the big league level, and I guess we have to hope that outfielders stay healthy this year.

A couple of names to know:

-Sergio Alcantara, Shortstop. As one of the likely first guys up in the event of middle infield injuries, he features a .658 OPS in 226 MiLB at bats.

-Trent Giambrone, 2B. Another possible call up in the event of injuries. He has a .741 MiLB OPS in 1480 ABs.

-P.J. Higgins, Catcher. Has a .724 OPS in 1686 MiLB ABs. He may be the first call should the Cubs lose a catcher for an extended period of time.

The AA Smokies have a couple prospects to watch, and a few players on the MLB 40 man.

For players on the 40 man roster, they are Miguel Amaya, Manuel Rodriguez and Christopher Morel. Their roster only has 3 outfielders currently.

Miguel Amaya is the top hitting prospect to watch. He previously played 99 games in A+ ball in 2019. I suspect we'll see a full season at AA. Morel is the Cubs 7th ranked prospect, at 3B.

Brailyn Marquez was slated to start here, until being assigned to the alternate site on 4/30/21.

The now A+ Cubs have Their roster set with just 4 outfielders as well. They have less top ranked prospects currently assigned to them than I would have guessed.

There are a couple pitchers to watch, including Ryan Jensen and Burl Carraway. Carraway will skip low A ball.

On the hitting side, Chase Strumpf and Cole Roederer (who's also listed on A-'s roster) are two top ranked guys to keep your eyes on.

The A- Pelicans will have quite a few players to watch this year. They also have 4 outfielders, making it so that all MiLB teams are the same.

The big name is Brennen Davis, the over atop prospect in the Cubs systems. There's also Ed Howard, the Cubs top pick in 2020. He's just 19. Yeison Santana, who came from the Yu Darvish trade, will also play. Carolina's own Scott Kobos will pitch.

Minor league opening day is tomorrow!
