Cubs trade for Jharel Cotton

On 11/24/2019, the Cubs acquired Jharel Cotton from the Oakland Athletics for $100,000 in cash considerations, having been recently designated for assignment by Oakland. Cotton is 27 years old. He went 11-10 with a 4.95 ERA in 29 starts spanning the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He spent 2018 injured, as he needed his UCL repaired.

He then spent 2019 at AAA, pitching in 18 games with a whopping 7.16 ERA. Bad. Good: His final 6 outings, he put up a 3.24 ERA. His ERA ballooned at AAA due to 8 home runs given up in just 27.2 innings. He started 3 games, and the remaining 15 appearances were out of the pen.

The upside is mainly a 3.85 career minor league ERA., paired with a 1.13 WHIP. He's had reasonable success at AA and AAA before the injury, so if he's healed there could be 40 man roster potential.

He's a classic Thed dice roll. He will likely get a shot in spring training to see if lightning can be caught in a bottle.
